Major Traffic Disruptions Expected on Massachusetts Turnpike Due to Bridge Replacement Project
Transportation officials are warning drivers on the Massachusetts Turnpike to brace for significant delays during two upcoming weekends in May and June. Starting at 9 p.m. on May 30 and lasting until 5 a.m. on June 2, followed by another closure from 9 p.m. on June 20 to 5 a.m. on June 23, all but one lane will be closed in both directions between exits 123 and 125. These closures are anticipated to lead to traffic backups of two to three hours.
The disruptions are part of a Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) project involving the rehabilitation and replacement of eight bridges at the Interstate 90/Interstate 95 interchange located on the Newton-Weston border. The project entails replacing five bridges, rehabilitating one, and overhauling the superstructures of two others. Additionally, train services on the MBTA Worcester line will be halted during these weekends, with Amtrak service to Albany also impacted. Free shuttle buses will be available to replace the suspended train services.
Drivers are advised to plan their travels accordingly to avoid the expected congestion.
