Needham Powers Past Newton North in High-Stakes Volleyball Clash
NEWTON — In a thrilling rematch, Needham overcame defending state champion Newton North with a decisive victory, winning 20-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19. The match marked a pivotal moment in this season’s rivalry, where past encounters saw Needham capture the state title just a year ago.
Missing standout senior Simon Vardeh due to injury, Newton North (12-3) started strong, clinching the first set. However, Needham (13-2) quickly adjusted, dominating the remaining sets with a tenacious style of play. “We didn’t play hungry in the first set,” said Needham coach Dave Powell, emphasizing the team’s focus and discipline in later sets.
Senior Will McDonald played a pivotal role, contributing eight kills and reflecting on the team’s camaraderie, which he attributed to their summer training together. Newton North coach Nile Fox praised his players for their resilience and highlighted the growth opportunities despite the loss, especially with young talents like freshman Aaron Stein stepping up.
As the tournament approaches, both teams prepare for an intense postseason, with Needham looking to build on its success and Newton North aiming for redemption if they meet again. Powell concluded, “This game was a good step in the right direction.”
