Terrell Williams on Leave from Patriots Due to Medical Condition
FOXBOROUGH—May 9, 2025 — The New England Patriots rookie minicamp kicked off on Friday without new defensive coordinator Terrell Williams, who is currently away from the team due to a medical condition. Head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed during a press conference that Williams is following doctor’s orders while managing a serious health issue in Detroit. In his absence, inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr has taken over his responsibilities.
“I have been in constant communication with him daily,” said Vrabel, emphasizing Williams’s eagerness to return. Despite not being physically present, Williams remains engaged, interacting with players and coaching staff through video calls.
During a separate video conference, Williams elaborated on his recent health scare, describing it as a “traumatic” experience. He stated, “I came back home for spring break and had a little medical scare. It wasn’t a little medical scare. It was a medical scare.” Williams conveyed appreciation for the support he has received from the team, particularly emphasizing the steady communication with Vrabel and the staff.
Newly hired this offseason, Williams brings significant experience to the Patriots after serving as a defensive line coach for the Detroit Lions and previously working with Vrabel at the Tennessee Titans. His expertise was recognized last year during the NFL combine when Lions head coach Dan Campbell praised him as potentially the best defensive line coach in the league.
As Williams focuses on his health, he stressed the importance of listening to one’s body and prioritizing well-being, reflecting on past misconceptions of invincibility.
For now, the Patriots will rely on Kuhr’s expertise until Williams makes his return.
