FFIO Visits Local Area to Provide Resources Amid Federal Uncertainty

Springfield Hosts Federal Funds & Infrastructure Office Event Amid Rapid Changes in Federal Funding Landscape

SPRINGFIELD — As the federal landscape shifts rapidly, Governor Maura Healey’s Federal Funds & Infrastructure Office (FFIO) is stepping up to provide vital resources. On May 7, the FFIO convened local officials and Pioneer Valley organizations at the University of Massachusetts Henry M. Thomas III Center to outline state and federal funding opportunities available to municipalities, nonprofits, and other entities in Massachusetts.

Quentin Palfrey, director of the FFIO, emphasized their mission to keep communities informed about accessible federal resources, including funding initiatives from significant legislation like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. In September 2024, legislation was passed that unlocked $750 million for Massachusetts, allowing the state to effectively pursue these funding opportunities.

Under Healey’s leadership, the state has secured over $9 billion for various transportation and infrastructure projects, including $15 million from the Safe Streets initiative in Springfield, improving crosswalk safety. However, the unpredictable nature of recent federal policies has created uncertainty. Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno highlighted severe cuts to grants aimed at improving local air quality and asthma prevention.

Palfrey, who previously served as acting general counsel of commerce for the Biden administration, acknowledged that while the FFIO emerged in a time of abundance, many programs have recently faced challenges. He assured communities that the FFIO is ready to assist them in navigating these obstacles.

During the event, attendees learned about various funding programs, such as the Rural Tribal Assistance Pilot Program and the School Violence Prevention Program. “There are numerous opportunities available,” Palfrey stated, encouraging communities to engage with the FFIO for support.
