Cougars Hand Walpole First Loss in Thrilling 13-8 Victory

WALPOLE — Notre Dame Academy (Hingham) demonstrated resilience on Friday, defeating the previously undefeated Walpole Timberwolves 13-8 in a highly anticipated match. Sophomore standout Sadie Lopez led the Cougars with five goals, propelling her team to a 13-3 season record.

The game started competitively, with both teams exchanging goals early on. However, Notre Dame quickly seized control, scoring four consecutive goals to lead 5-1. Lopez contributed significantly, netting two goals just before halftime to push the lead to 8-2.

As the second half commenced under pouring rain, Walpole attempted a comeback, with notable contributions from Sophia Fruci and UMass commit Caitlyn Naughton, narrowing the gap to 8-6. Just as momentum seemed to shift, Lopez’s timely free position goal halted Walpole’s surge, restoring a three-goal advantage.

Emma Whoriskey further extended the lead with a late third-quarter goal, closing the third stanza at 10-6. Taylor Watts also added two goals to secure the win. Lopez recognized the team’s unity as key to their performance and expressed hope to reclaim their status as the state’s top team. The Cougars’ victory could signal a return to dominance in the competitive state landscape.
