WooSox Fall Short Despite 6th-Inning Rally Against Lehigh Valley

Worcester Red Sox Fall to IronPigs in Nail-Biting Finish

Coca-Cola Park was the stage for a thrilling encounter as the Worcester Red Sox faced off against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, ultimately falling 5-4 on Friday night. Nathan Hickey delivered an impressive sixth-inning grand slam, which briefly put the WooSox ahead 4-3 after overcoming a three-run deficit. Despite the heroics, the IronPigs quickly equalized with a run-scoring single from Erick Brito.

The game took a decisive turn in the ninth inning when Lehigh Valley’s Garrett Stubbs laid down a sacrifice bunt, causing a crucial throwing error from Worcester’s relief pitcher, Wyatt Millis. This error allowed Rodolfo Castro to score the game-winning run, solidifying the IronPigs’ victory.

Hickey’s impressive performance netted him all four of Worcester’s runs, while Marcelo Mayer contributed with two hits. On the mound, starting pitcher Brian Van Belle struck out six batters over four innings. Despite Worcester’s strong efforts, including stranding 11 runners and a 1-for-13 performance with runners in scoring position, they couldn’t secure the win.

The Worcester Red Sox (18-18) will seek redemption in a rematch against the IronPigs on Saturday at 6:35 p.m.
