Press Article: Surge in Rail-Vehicle Collisions Raises Safety Concerns for MBTA Commuter Rail
Since the start of 2023, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has reported six collisions between commuter rail trains and vehicles, resulting in two fatalities. These incidents began with a minor crash in Concord in February, followed by three more in Canton, which each resulted in injuries. Tragically, late April and early May saw deadly collisions in Abington and Cohasset, where drivers lost their lives despite functional safety mechanisms, including crossing gates and warning lights.
Although train-vehicle collisions have drastically decreased nationally—down 81% in fifty years—these recent incidents have alarmed local officials and transit authorities. MBTA Advisory Board Executive Director Brian Kane expressed concern, stating, "One is too many." Investigations into these accidents reveal that in almost every case, driver distraction and impatience were to blame.
As a response, the MBTA is enhancing awareness campaigns and improving safety features at crossings, including clearer signage and brighter LED lights. Officials stress the importance of education, reminding drivers that caution at crossings can prevent tragedies. As MBTA Chief Operating Officer Ryan Coholan noted, the rise in incidents is troubling, leading to calls for renewed vigilance and public awareness in rail safety.
