Worcester Police Union Criticizes Councilor Over Immigration Incident
The Worcester Police Patrol Officers’ Union has condemned City Councilor Etel Haxhiaj for allegedly inciting aggression towards police during a volatile incident involving federal immigration agents. The conflict erupted on Eureka Street as city officers assisted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) amidst a hostile crowd reacting to their presence.
In videos from the scene, Councilor Haxhiaj is seen confronting police officers following the arrest of a teenage girl, reportedly the daughter of a woman detained by ICE. Haxhiaj criticized the officers’ use of force, suggesting alternatives to the arrest, while asserting her role as a protector of her constituents. "I am trying to protect my constituent," she told police, challenging the necessity of their actions.
The union released a statement claiming Haxhiaj not only violated her ethical obligations but also participated in the chaotic scene, which they labeled “deplorable.” They’ve demanded an ethics investigation into her conduct, asserting that city officials should never undermine law enforcement efforts to maintain public safety.
The situation has also drawn legal repercussions, including charges against Worcester School Committee candidate Ashley Spring, accused of assaulting police officers and interfering with ICE. She has since been released on personal recognizance and is set for a hearing later in June.
In response to the incident, Mayor Joseph M. Petty has called for a written policy outlining local interactions with ICE, emphasizing that local governments must support their residents amidst federal immigration actions.
Governor Maura Healey weighed in, stating that while collaboration with law enforcement is essential, the actions witnessed in Worcester were concerning. The police union underscored its commitment to balancing compassion with duty in challenging situations.
