Massachusetts Voters’ Sentiments Shift Amid Economic Concerns: Poll Findings
In a recent poll conducted by the Retailers Association of Massachusetts, a growing dissatisfaction among voters regarding the state’s economy has been revealed, with most feeling the Bay State is not on the right track. Out of 600 registered voters surveyed from April 23 to April 29, most expressed negativity towards the state’s economic outlook, rather than placing the blame on Democratic Governor Maura Healey or the state Legislature. Instead, respondents turned their ire towards President Donald Trump, who holds a mere 28% favorability rating in the state; 67% of those polled reported having an unfavorable impression of him.
Voters particularly cited economic concerns, with 76% believing Trump’s tariffs would negatively impact businesses and consumers in Massachusetts. Key issues troubling residents include the cost of living (83% concerned), healthcare expenses (72%), housing costs (69%), and energy prices (68%). Moreover, only 39% felt the state was headed in the right direction, a 9-point drop from the previous year. Confidence in the Massachusetts economy has also waned, with just 8% of respondents expressing "very confident" feelings, down from 16% in 2022.
While nearly half (58%) of voters hold a favorable view of Healey, this is a slight decline from earlier numbers. In contrast, only 39% had a positive impression of Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll. Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren garnered 52% and 54% favorability, respectively.
Political affiliations revealed a shift, with 64% identifying as independent or unenrolled, compared to 26% identifying as Democrats and just 9% as Republicans. This poll reflects a significant moment as Massachusetts voters grapple with economic challenges and express rising skepticism towards national leadership. The margin of error for the survey is 4%.
