Patriots Expand Roster with New Signings, Utilizing International Player Exemption
The New England Patriots have added depth to their roster by signing three new players: defensive tackle Isaih Iton, guard Mehki Butler, and defensive end Wilfried Pene. This move brings the team’s roster to 92 players, exceeding the usual limit by two. In a necessary adjustment, the Patriots released undrafted free-agent tackle Cole Birdow to make room for Pene, who qualifies for an international roster exemption.
Pene, originally from Tours, France, is the latest addition under the NFL’s International Player Pathway program, designed to give international athletes better chances to integrate into the league. To be eligible, players must be born outside the United States. Pene honed his skills at St. Thomas More School in Connecticut before furthering his college career at Virginia Tech. In his last college season, he demonstrated strong defensive capabilities, recording 22 tackles, including 5.5 for loss, and 3.5 sacks over 13 games, four of which he started.
This signing marks a continuation of the Patriots’ commitment to diversifying their roster through international talent. Previously, the team welcomed players from the program, including fullback Jakob Johnson from Germany, who became a notable success by making the 53-man roster, and Jotham Russell from Australia, who was on the practice squad last season but did not secure a futures contract.
As the team gears up for the offseason, these strategic moves highlight the Patriots’ ongoing efforts to fortify their lineup while embracing global talent, showcasing their commitment to growth both on and off the field.
