Worcester Protests After Immigrant Detention Incident
Worcester witnessed a massive turnout this weekend as approximately a thousand residents gathered for an "emergency protest" against the recent detention of a local immigrant mother by federal agents. The protest, organized by Massachusetts 50501, follows a chaotic scene on Thursday where dozens of residents attempted to prevent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from taking the woman into custody. Organizers, including Rebecca Winter, criticized ICE’s actions, likening them to historical forms of oppression.
The detained mother, Ferreria de Oliveira, has a controversial legal history, but details remain unclear, as local court records do not show any convictions. Tensions escalated during the ICE operation, leading to arrests, including that of her 16-year-old daughter and a local campaigner. Councilor Etel Haxhiaj, who was present during the incident, faced backlash from Federal authorities for allegedly obstructing law enforcement and "inciting chaos." The Department of Homeland Security dismissed her actions as a “political stunt.”
Despite the charged atmosphere, Haxhiaj, along with community members, reiterated their demands for ICE to cease operations in Worcester, emphasizing concerns over the treatment of immigrants in the city.
