Karen Read Murder Trial Delayed Amid Controversy
CANTON, MA — The murder trial of Karen Read was unexpectedly halted Tuesday due to "unavoidable circumstances," according to court officials. The notice arrived shortly before the scheduled 9 a.m. testimony, and details regarding the delay were not disclosed.
Read, 45, is accused of intentionally striking her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, with her SUV while reportedly intoxicated on January 29, 2022. Prosecutors assert that she left him to die in a blizzard after the incident, while Read’s defense claims O’Keefe was attacked upon entering a home after an afterparty. Her attorneys have suggested a conspiracy among law enforcement and party attendees to frame her.
This week in Norfolk Superior Court, jurors heard extensive testimony from Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Yuriy Bukhenik, who investigated O’Keefe’s death. During his testimony, Bukhenik faced scrutiny concerning a guest at the afterparty, federal agent Brian Higgins. Defense lawyers allege Higgins had motive to harm O’Keefe following flirtatious exchanges with Read. However, Bukhenik reported no evidence of animosity between O’Keefe and Higgins.
The case will continue as authorities aim to unravel the events surrounding O’Keefe’s tragic death.
