Red Sox Pitcher Brayan Bello Opens Up About Family Struggles During 2024 Season
DETROIT — Brayan Bello, the talented Red Sox starter, experienced a tumultuous 2024 season, marked by a 5.16 ERA through his first 21 starts. Initially speculated causes included pressure from his six-year, $55 million contract and a minor lat injury. However, a deeper issue came to light in the Netflix documentary “The Clubhouse,” which chronicled the Red Sox season.
In Episode 5, titled “Boston, You’re My Home,” Bello shared the emotional toll of being separated from his wife, Anabely, and their two children, who remained in the Dominican Republic due to visa complications. “It’s not easy,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora, emphasizing the invisible struggles many players face while away from family. The lack of familial support, especially during a challenging season, weighed heavily on Bello, who described the isolation as “very difficult.”
Bello reflected on the months spent away from his family, which included a daughter born in July 2023 and a son in August 2022. During a touching moment captured in the documentary, Bello confided in Cora about his longing for family, who offered emotional support in Spanish, illustrating the significance of having someone understand his plight.
Fortunately, the Bello family has recently secured the necessary visas and will reunite in Boston for the 2025 season. Early indications show promise for Bello’s performance; after returning from the injured list, he has maintained a 2.01 ERA through four starts. As Bello prepares for his next game in Detroit, he acknowledges the past struggles but focuses on the future, eager to share moments with his family — including watching the documentary together.
