Braintree’s Bella Duffy Leads Team to Historic Win Over Weymouth
BRAINTREE — Braintree senior Bella Duffy, an Iona commit, made history by scoring the game-winning goal in overtime, leading her lacrosse team to a thrilling 10-9 victory over Weymouth. This win marked the first time Duffy and her teammates defeated Weymouth in their varsity careers, breaking a long-standing losing streak.
The game initially showcased Braintree’s dominance, with early goals from Emily McDonough, Frankie Mazzini, and Mia Francis, putting them in the lead. Braintree’s goalie, Norah Downey, was vital to their success, achieving crucial saves that kept the Wamps ahead. Coach Jillian Coene praised Downey’s development, noting her impressive 300 saves this season.
Despite an aggressive start, Braintree faced a tough challenge as Weymouth began to gain momentum in the second half. The Wildcats, led by Kira Keenan, clawed back to take the lead in the fourth quarter. However, Duffy showcased her leadership by scoring a crucial goal, tying the game with just a minute left.
The overtime saw Duffy earning a free position shot after being fouled during a run toward the goal. Capitalizing on the opportunity, she scored to clinch the victory, prompting wild celebrations from her teammates. "It’s a great way to bookend my career against Weymouth," Duffy remarked.
Duffy finished the match with five goals and an assist, coming just one point shy of Braintree’s all-time career points record. "I focused on the game and the team," she explained, emphasizing teamwork over personal records.
Next, Braintree will face Needham, while Weymouth will look to rebound against King Philip on Friday.
