In a pivotal Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, the Boston Celtics showcased their championship resilience, defeating the New York Knicks 91-76, despite star player Jayson Tatum being sidelined.
With Kristaps Porzingis struggling due to illness, it fell upon bench player Luke Kornet to rise to the occasion. Kornet, a 7-foot-1 center, delivered a standout performance, recording an impressive seven blocks and contributing 10 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting.
Kornet’s defensive prowess was crucial for the Celtics, particularly in the third quarter, where he swatted five shots within a six-minute span, helping to transform a tight 59-59 tie into a commanding 91-76 lead. His defensive contributions were pivotal in holding back the Knicks, with teammates praising his impact. "Luke was huge tonight, defensively and offensively," said Jaylen Brown, highlighting Kornet’s importance during this do-or-die game.
Kornet’s performance marked a historic achievement, as he became the first player in NBA playoff history to record at least 10 points, nine rebounds, and seven blocks while finishing with perfect shooting. His stats underscore not only his defensive skills but also his efficiency in scoring.
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla’s decision to increase Kornet’s playing time proved essential, especially with Porzingis struggling. Kornet emphasized his readiness to adapt to whatever role is required, saying, “Whatever Coach asks me to do, I’m just there to do it.”
As the Celtics head into Game 6 at Madison Square Garden, all eyes will be on Kornet and his potential to replicate or surpass his breakthrough performance, particularly if Porzingis remains limited.
