Jackie and Shadow’s eaglets, Sunny and Gizmo, have grown significantly since their hatching in March 2025 in Big Bear, Southern California. At 10 weeks old, the eaglets are preparing to leave the nest and eventually fly on their own. Following public anticipation about their eggs hatching, the two surviving eaglets have garnered a dedicated fan base through Friends of Big Bear Valley, a non-profit organization that provides a 24-hour live feed of the eagle family.
As the eaglets prepare for flight, their parents, Jackie and Shadow, are enhancing the nest with larger sticks to serve as guardrails and training aids. Recently, Sunny and Gizmo have been seen exploring the nest’s edges, and they are starting to exercise their wings, encouraged by the wind. In a notable moment, Sunny even managed a brief hover off the nest, showcasing their progress toward independent flight.
Sadly, the family faced loss when their third hatchling, Misty, passed away due to a snowstorm. However, Jackie and Shadow continue to nurture Sunny and Gizmo, ensuring they learn how to find food independently.
To engage the growing audience, Friends of Big Bear Valley has introduced a contest called FledgeFest 2025, where fans can predict the exact date and time the eaglets will take their first flight. The deadline for entries is May 16 at 8 p.m. PT, providing an opportunity for fans to celebrate the eaglets’ impending independence. Through these developments, Sunny and Gizmo are not just becoming adept at flying; they are also becoming cherished symbols of wildlife conservation and community engagement.
