Monastery of Simonos Petra: A Sanctuary of Ecumenical Spirituality on Mount Athos
MOUNT ATHOS, Greece (AP) — The stunning Monastery of Simonos Petra, perched precariously on cliffs above the Aegean Sea, embodies an extraordinary Christian Orthodox community that transcends national boundaries. Founded in the 13th century by Saint Simon the Myrrh-bearer, this architectural marvel welcomes a diverse community of monks, both native and foreign, united in faith.
Within the autonomous all-male monastic community of Mount Athos, Simonos Petra stands out for its eclectic mix of nationalities, housing monks from Europe, the U.S., and beyond, all under the guidance of Abbot Eliseos. "Spiritually, there are no borders," he asserts, emphasizing the monastery’s commitment to inclusiveness.
Despite its long-standing tradition of barring women from the peninsula, Simonos Petra invites men of all backgrounds to visit and explore their faith. The monastery functions on principles of love and brotherhood, fostering connections among its 65 monks, who engage in farming, winemaking, and community life.
Monastic life remains largely unchanged for over a millennium, underscoring a deep-seated commitment to spirituality and resilience. As Father Isaiah notes, many find profound meaning and community in Simonos Petra, a sanctuary that embodies the essence of global Orthodoxy.
