Massachusetts Man Charged with Attempted Assassination of Cabinet Nominee
A 24-year-old Massachusetts man, Ryan Michael English, has been charged with attempting to assassinate a U.S. cabinet nominee, the Department of Justice announced this week. English was arrested in January after allegedly attempting to enter the U.S. Capitol with two improvised Molotov cocktails and a knife, targeting then-Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent during his confirmation process.
On Thursday, English faced charges of attempted assassination and carrying a dangerous weapon on Capitol grounds during an initial court appearance. Prosecutors revealed that his plans extended beyond Bessent; he initially intended to kill House Speaker Mike Johnson and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. His motive was reportedly inspired by the actions of another murder suspect, Luigi Mangione, the CEO of United HealthCare.
According to charging documents, on January 27, English approached a U.S. Capitol Police officer and expressed a desire to surrender, claiming he had two Molotov cocktails and knives, stating his intent to "kill Scott Bessent." Upon searching him, officers discovered a folding knife along with two homemade incendiary devices made from vodka bottles, as well as a lighter.
Federal prosecutors have described English’s actions as a serious threat, emphasizing the gravity of his intentions. The case underscores ongoing concerns about security threats against government officials and the potential for political violence as tensions rise in the current political climate.
As the investigation continues, English remains in custody, his charges reflecting the heightened scrutiny authorities face in protecting those serving in government roles. The case will likely draw significant media attention as it unfolds, serving as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in protecting democratic institutions.
