‘Frustrated’ Crowd in Massachusetts Surrounds ICE Agents Trying to Detain Mother

Chaos Erupts as ICE Agents Detain Worcester Woman: Community Responds

WORCESTER, MA—In a dramatic confrontation on Thursday, residents of a Worcester neighborhood clashed with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents attempting to detain a mother alongside her teenage daughter and newborn baby. The incident occurred around 11:15 a.m. on Eureka Street, shortly after the woman’s husband was apprehended by ICE the day before.

Video footage of the scene quickly went viral, illustrating the tense standoff as 25 neighbors surrounded the agents, demanding to see identification and a warrant. One ICE official reportedly rebuffed these requests, inciting further outrage among the crowd. In response, enforcement sought assistance from Worcester police, who described the gathering as "unruly" and said that some individuals physically confronted law enforcement agents.

Amid the turmoil, the mother reportedly handed her infant to her 16-year-old daughter, who then stood in front of the ICE vehicle, trying to prevent its departure. As chaos escalated, authorities restrained the teen, who was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including child endangerment.

Among those arrested was local School Committee candidate Ashley Spring, accused of assaulting an officer. Worcester City Councilor Etel Haxhiaj voiced her concerns, emphasizing the need for humane treatment of immigrant families, while City Manager Eric Batista expressed his dismay at the situation, calling it "disturbing."

Mayor Joseph Petty lamented the family’s separation, especially with Mother’s Day approaching, emphasizing the fear and anxiety surrounding ICE’s operations in the community. Local officials confirmed they had not been informed of the ICE action ahead of time.

As tensions rise in Greater Boston amid heightened immigration enforcement, community leaders are calling for compassion and reform in federal policies that affect families. The Independent has sought further comment from ICE for clarification on the operation.
