Red Sox Manager Discusses Expectations for Kristian Campbell at First Base

Red Sox Look to Rookie Kristian Campbell as First Base Replacement Amid Injuries

Boston Red Sox are exploring options at first base following Triston Casas’ season-ending knee injury. With limited experience in-house, Romy Gonzalez, Abraham Toro, and Nick Sogard have filled in, while Rafael Devers has also been considered for a move. The latest option is rookie Kristian Campbell, who began taking ground balls at first base last Friday and participated in drills during Sunday’s warm-ups.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora emphasized the challenges of transitioning players to new positions, recalling past difficulties with Kyle Schwarber and others. Campbell’s potential debut at first base will depend on his performance during practice. "This isn’t a commitment; we want to introduce him to the position," Cora stated, hinting that game-time opportunities will come if the situation allows, particularly in low-pressure scenarios.

Despite a recent slump—hitting just .085 over his last 11 games—Cora remains confident in Campbell’s abilities. "It’s part of a rookie’s journey," he explained, urging patience as Campbell adapts to major league pitching. The Red Sox believe in the 22-year-old’s long-term potential and are committed to his development amid the challenges of a 162-game season.
