Republicans Rally to Revive Tax Cut and Border Security Package
WASHINGTON — In a bid to restore momentum for their ambitious tax cut and border security legislation, Republicans conducted an unusual Sunday night committee meeting after the House Budget Committee rebuffed the measure two days earlier. A coalition of deficit-conscious lawmakers, including five Republicans, opposed advancing the bill, citing concerns over its potential negative impact on federal budget deficits.
House Budget Committee Chairman Mike Johnson expressed optimism that the bill would progress to the full House by week’s end, declaring it crucial to fulfilling the mandate voters issued in the last election. Critics within the party pointed out that the bill’s spending and tax cuts are front-loaded, while strategies to offset costs are slated for future implementation.
"Writing checks we cannot cash will burden our children," warned Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), one of four Republican dissenters. Johnson defended the delayed work requirements for Medicaid recipients, asserting it allows states necessary preparation time.
Despite the pushback, Johnson remains hopeful that negotiations will address the concerns raised, affirming commitment from party members to move the proposal forward.
