Stranger Assisting With Furniture Move Discovers Dead Body; Steven Eberly Taken Into Custody

A Texas man, Steven Eberly, has been arrested after a stranger he invited to help move furniture discovered a human body in his home. On May 16, multiple calls were made to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office about a suspicious individual and a hit-and-run incident. The driver, who had been offered money by Eberly to assist with moving, found a body wrapped in a blanket inside one of the boxes.

Feeling alarmed, the man attempted to leave, prompting Eberly to jump into the truck bed and break windows to prevent his escape. This resulted in a crash, after which Eberly fled on foot. He was later found by a 911 caller, bleeding from the head, and was subsequently taken to the hospital and arrested on a murder charge.

The deceased was identified as Luis Silva Mendez, a contractor who had been working at Eberly’s home. The circumstances surrounding Mendez’s death are still under investigation, with autopsy results pending. Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the crime. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has not provided additional details regarding the case as of May 19.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez described the incident as “strange,” highlighting the unusual sequence of events leading up to the discovery of the body and Eberly’s subsequent actions. The investigation continues without a clear motive at this time.
