Massachusetts Senate President Karen Spilka Reflects on Chaotic Legislative Session
Boston, MA – Massachusetts Senate President Karen Spilka described the current legislative session as “crazy, chaotic” during an interview with NBC10 Boston, 121 days into the new session. With a busy 2024 behind them, which saw significant advancements in gun reform, health care, and education, the focus for 2025 appears to be shifting towards federal issues.
Spilka expressed frustration at the rapid changes coming from the Trump administration, noting that the reversals happen “not monthly, not weekly, but hourly.” Amidst these challenges, Spilka is advocating for a gun reform bill and pushing an ambitious plan to make community college tuition-free for all Massachusetts residents.
The November elections further complicated the legislative landscape with the passage of Ballot Question One, aimed at allowing State Auditor Diana DiZoglio to audit the legislature. Spilka is staunchly opposed to this initiative, citing concerns about the separation of powers and the potential misuse of auditing authority. “We’ve done an annual audit by a certified public accountant for several years,” she stated. “I believe it prevents the auditor from using it as a weapon.”
Looking ahead, Spilka is prepared for continued legislative battles and confirms her intention to seek reelection. “I decided I am running for President of the Senate,” she declared, signaling her commitment to influence state legislation and protect Massachusetts’ interests amid a turbulent federal landscape. As the Senate prepares for another session, Spilka’s leadership will be pivotal in navigating the complexities ahead.
