New England Revolution Falls to Chicago Fire FC in U.S. Open Cup
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The New England Revolution suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Chicago Fire FC in the Round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
Despite outshooting Chicago 9-4, New England could not capitalize on their chances. They nearly took the lead in the 27th minute when defender Brandon Bye’s header was saved by Fire goalkeeper Chris Brady. Momentum shifted in favor of Chicago just before halftime, as a deflected cross from Jonathan Bamba gave them a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute.
The Fire extended their advantage in the second half with goals from Hugo Cuypers in the 70th minute and Philip Zinckernagel in the 79th minute, rendering New England’s late response moot. Gevork Diarbian, a native of Cranston, R.I., scored a consolation goal in the 89th minute following a deflection.
The match showcased a youthful Revolution lineup, with notable performances from 18-year-old Allan Oyirwoth and 17-year-old Damario McIntosh, who made his first team debut. Additionally, three players from Revolution II — Alex Monis, Victor Souza, and Hesron Barry — also earned their senior team debuts.
