Westfield High School Boys Volleyball Advances in Semifinal Sweep

WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School boys volleyball team showcased their dominance in the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference (PVIAC) Class A semifinals, defeating No. 3 West Springfield in a decisive 3-0 sweep. The match, held at Westfield’s home court, ended with set scores of 25-23, 25-18, and 25-22, solidifying Westfield’s standing as a formidable competitor in the region.

Coach Tyler Wingate praised his players for their performance against a respected opponent that they may face again in the future. “They were tough to stop,” he noted, acknowledging West Springfield’s strong defense and effective ball distribution from their setter.

Despite the intense competition, Westfield consistently regained control of the game. Key contributions came from Gio Gonzalez, who delivered five kills, four assists, and two aces, and Andrew Yerak, who added five kills of his own. The Bombers battled through ties late in the final set before Gonzalez executed a pair of critical aces, giving Westfield a lead they maintained until the end. Senior Zach Kukharchuk also stood out with 10 kills and strong defensive efforts.

As the Bombers prepare for the PVIAC Class A championship against top-seeded Agawam, anticipation is high. Coach Wingate expressed confidence in his team’s growth and resilience. “This group is very into this stuff. They love to understand the game and how to improve,” he said. With a championship match set for Saturday at Chicopee Comprehensive High School, the Bombers are trending in the right direction as they aim for further success in the postseason.
