Pacific Coast Highway Reopens After Deadly Wildfire Closure

Drone footage has captured the devastating aftermath of recent wildfires along Malibu’s coast. The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) officially reopened on May 23, ending over four months of closure due to the deadly Palisades Fire that began in January. The reopening, ahead of schedule before the Memorial Day weekend, allows two lanes in each direction, albeit with a speed limit of 25 mph in construction zones. This section of the highway, essential for local traffic, had been closed for about 11 miles from Santa Monica to Malibu.

California Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized efficiency in the reopening process, calling it crucial for the recovery of Malibu’s local businesses. Mayor Marianne Riggins noted that this action marks a significant step towards recovery for the community. These wildfires, which also included the Eaton Fire, led to 29 fatalities and devastated more than 37,000 acres, being ranked among the most destructive in California’s history.

Local businesses, particularly Scott’s Malibu Market, are hopeful that increased highway access will boost foot traffic and sales, with the owner expressing optimism after a successful Mother’s Day weekend. The highway’s closure had exacerbated congestion on nearby freeways, complicating travel for residents and tourists alike.

Crews from various agencies worked tirelessly to clear debris and restore safe access to the highway, an essential lifeline for coastal communities. The military and local authorities emphasized safety as a priority during the recovery process, pledging to support residents in rebuilding efforts. Mayor Karen Bass reiterated the commitment to ensuring a secure return for those affected by the fires, fostering a communal effort toward recovery and resilience.
