Alex Cora Suggests Potential Boston Red Sox Roster Changes Due to Bullpen Strain

Red Sox Split Doubleheader with Orioles in Tough Pitching Circumstances

BOSTON — Lucas Giolito was a standout performer for the Boston Red Sox, delivering an impressive 7 scoreless innings in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. The 30-year-old righty limited the Orioles to six hits and two walks while striking out six, becoming the second Red Sox starter in the last eight games to pitch five innings. Despite Giolito’s efforts, the Red Sox fell short, losing 2-1 after Boston’s offense stalled.

The split brought the Red Sox to a 27-27 record for the season. The first game saw Boston clinching a narrow 6-5 victory in 10 innings, capped by Rafael Devers’ game-winning RBI.

Manager Alex Cora expressed concern over the overworked bullpen, having deployed eight different relievers in Saturday’s games due to starters consistently failing to pitch deep into contests. "We’re going to feel it for a few days," Cora admitted, indicating that roster decisions may be necessary in the days ahead.

In a move to bolster the pitching staff, the Red Sox designated Sean Newcomb for assignment and recalled right-hander Luis Guerrero. Newcomb, who posted a 3.95 ERA in 12 appearances, had been heavily utilized recently, necessitating the shift for a fresher arm.

Guerrero faced challenges in his return, allowing two runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Cora noted Guerrero’s erratic control, which contributed to the defeat. "We don’t like [the walks]. We’ll keep working with him," Cora said. "He’s a good pitcher. Just didn’t happen today."

Despite the setbacks, the Red Sox remain competitive as they navigate a challenging stretch of the season.
