Orioles Edge Out Red Sox 2-1 in Game Two of Doubleheader
BOSTON, MA (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles narrowly defeated the Boston Red Sox 2-1 on Saturday night at Fenway Park, halting their recent slide and avoiding a doubleheader sweep.
Ryan O’Hearn provided the decisive moment with a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning, scoring Gunnar Henderson. The Orioles had been struggling, having won only two of their last 12 games. Dylan Carlson contributed an RBI double earlier in the contest.
For Boston, Abraham Toro’s impressive solo home run marked his second of the day and kept hopes alive in the ninth inning, but the Red Sox couldn’t capitalize further. Rafael Devers, representing a significant threat, grounded out with two runners on base to end the eighth.
In the first game, the Red Sox triumphed 6-5, bolstered by Devers’ performance. New top prospect Marcelo Mayer made his debut, unfortunately going 0 for 4 with three strikeouts.
Starting Pitcher Lucas Giolito completed six scoreless innings, showcasing his recovery from elbow surgery. The Orioles’ Trevor Rogers, making his first start of the season, displayed resilience, retiring 16 batters in succession after a rocky start. The two teams will clash again on Sunday with Boston’s Walker Buehler expected to take the mound.
