Tornadoes, Storms, and Hail May Impact Memorial Day Travel and Events

Severe weather in 2025 has inflicted billions in damages across the U.S., with flood watches issued for states including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas. Major cities like Oklahoma City, Little Rock, and Memphis are particularly at risk due to an influx of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, which has led to hazardous weather conditions and the threat of tornadoes. The National Weather Service forecasts continued heavy rains through Memorial Day, contributing to concerns about flash flooding in streams and rivers across the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys.

Forecaster Paul Ziegenfelder highlighted the potential dangers of thunderstorms, including high winds exceeding 75 mph, hail up to two inches, and the possibility of tornadoes. The weather system, extending from the Southeast to the Southern Plains and Central Rockies, is expected to persist through Tuesday, exacerbating the risks of flooding and severe storms, particularly over Memorial Day weekend.

As millions prepare to travel for the holiday, AAA projects that approximately 45.1 million Americans will take to the roads—a 1.4 million increase from last year—making it one of the most traveled weekends. Many families opt for short road trips, while others embark on longer vacations. AAA also anticipates a 2% rise in air travel, indicating that even amidst severe weather disruptions, holiday travel remains robust. While cautions are issued concerning severe weather, travelers are encouraged to plan carefully to navigate any disruptions on the road.
