MIT Students Merge STEM and Policy Perspectives for Real-World Impact
In a striking blend of academic disciplines at MIT, senior Kevin Guo and junior Erin Hovendon are leveraging their studies in computer science and mechanical engineering, respectively, with minors in political science and public policy. Although their educational paths differ, both students recognize the importance of intertwining technology and policy to address pressing societal issues.
Guo’s journey began at MIT’s Election Data and Science Lab, where he initially sought to enhance his coding skills. He discovered a vital intersection between technology and democratic processes. “My work allowed me to analyze political datasets, showcasing the significant role data science plays in elections,” Guo shared. This experience paved his way toward a career as a quantitative financial trader, reinforcing his belief that a political science background is critical in understanding the macroeconomic implications of policies affecting financial markets.
Simultaneously, Hovendon is immersing herself in climate solutions through her work at MIT’s Environmental Dynamics Lab, focusing on marine carbon dioxide removal technologies. She emphasizes that the successful application of her engineering projects hinges on grasping the societal impact of these innovations. “Understanding the policies needed for scalability is key,” she explained, highlighting the necessity of public engagement for advancing climate technology.
Both students agree that their interdisciplinary studies offer a valuable platform for tackling real-world challenges. Guo credits small seminars in political science for cultivating deep discussions with diverse peers, while Hovendon reflects on the importance of anthropology courses that evaluate the interplay between technology and public perception.
As they look toward their futures—Guo in finance and Hovendon potentially in renewable energy technology—both aspire to integrate their technical skills with a robust understanding of policy to foster meaningful societal change.
