Shea Sprague’s Dream Come True with Red Sox
Hailing from Hanover, 22-year-old Shea Sprague has realized a childhood dream by pitching for the Boston Red Sox, the team he grew up watching with his family. After being selected in the 13th round of the 2022 MLB Draft, Sprague faced early struggles with the Low-A Salem Red Sox, but he has since transformed his performance. Following a rocky start with nine earned runs in 5 ⅔ innings, he has rebounded spectacularly, posting a 1.46 ERA over his last five outings, allowing just four runs in 24 ⅔ innings while striking out 28 batters.
Sprague attributes his turnaround to improved confidence and a focus on attacking hitters rather than being overly cautious. His fastball and changeup have become effective weapons, with his changeup being particularly notable for its depth and speed variation—skills refined during his time at BC High and UNC. The Red Sox have encouraged Sprague to develop a gyro slider and a sweeper, enhancing his versatility against both left- and right-handed hitters.
As he aims to add velocity to his fastball, currently clocked at 89-92 mph, Sprague is fully committed to his development—both physically and technically. "I can’t ask for anything more," he expresses, exhilarated by the journey ahead.
