Press Release: Massachusetts Leaders Rally Against Proposed Medicaid Cuts
Revere, MA — On Tuesday, Dr. Michael Curry, CEO of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, highlighted the human impact of Medicaid during a gathering with state leaders at the Cambridge Health Alliance’s Revere Care Center. Curry shared compelling stories of residents who rely on MassHealth, as Medicaid is known in Massachusetts, to access critical health services.
Among those affected is a middle-aged woman suffering from chronic pain and PTSD, who received essential support through MassHealth. Another is an elderly Boston resident with diabetes, whose management of the condition depends on consistent access to care and medication.
This initiative comes in response to proposed cuts to Medicaid in President Donald Trump’s recent domestic policy bill, which has already passed the U.S. House by a narrow margin. The bill seeks to slash Medicaid funding by nearly $700 billion over a decade, potentially impacting 250,000 individuals in Massachusetts alone. Governor Maura Healey condemned the cuts as a “blunt-force axe” that will inflict significant harm on vulnerable populations.
Joining Healey at the event were U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, along with state Senator Lydia Edwards and Revere Mayor Patrick Keefe Jr. Markey characterized the ongoing debate as a “historic battle,” positioning it as a direct conflict against what he termed the Trump administration’s “Make America Sick Again” agenda.
Warren further criticized the bill as the “greatest transfer of wealth” from low-income families to the wealthy, asserting that it prioritizes billionaires at the expense of hard-working Americans.
Curry urged a focus on the real faces behind the statistics, recounting his own family’s reliance on MassHealth. As discussions on Medicaid policy continue, advocates remain vigilant against the repercussions of potential cuts to this crucial health program.
