Trump-Supported Gaza Aid Plan Overshadowed by Stampede

Chaos erupted in Gaza on May 27 as a new food distribution initiative, backed by former President Trump, began amid an Israeli blockade causing widespread famine. Thousands of Palestinians rushed a checkpoint in southern Gaza, leading Israeli soldiers to open fire, resulting in at least 47 injuries. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the government would take control of food distribution, reinforcing that the effort was not genuinely humanitarian but an extension of collective punishment against Palestinians, according to UN officials.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), the organization overseeing the distribution, is controversial for its ties to armed contractors and the Trump administration. Critics warn that its militarized approach could undermine impartial humanitarian principles, with resignations from key leadership indicating deep concerns over neutrality and the plan’s feasibility. Jake Wood, the foundation’s director, stepped down, citing the inability to adhere to critical humanitarian guidelines amidst military involvement.

Despite the entry of humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza after a prolonged blockade, the situation remains dire, with reports of severe malnutrition among children and insufficient food supplies. Aid organizations criticized the GHF’s model for failing to adequately address the needs of the population while fearing that it may exacerbate displacement, as Israel pushes for the evacuation of northern Gaza.

With only limited rations distributed and a substantial portion of the population facing acute food insecurity, humanitarian experts emphasize that the true solution lies in lifting the blockade entirely. They argue that ensuring clear, unobstructed access to aid is crucial for alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
