Healey Criticizes ICE for Insufficient Information on Arrests in Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket

Governor Healey Critiques ICE Operations on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket

In a press conference on Wednesday, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed strong criticism of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) recent operation that resulted in the arrest of about 40 individuals on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Healey emphasized the lack of information shared with state and local officials, stating, “We have zero information about what’s happening in communities,” and called for greater transparency from ICE.

The agency characterized those detained as "alien offenders," noting that one individual is allegedly linked to the MS-13 gang, with at least one child sex offender among those apprehended. However, detailed information about the arrests remains undisclosed, leading local leaders to question the legitimacy of the operation, alleging profiling without clear cause.

Healey highlighted concerns over due process and the fear generated within communities by such actions. “It’s concerning when people, including moms and dads, are ripped away from their families,” she remarked. While Healey, a former attorney general, is open to collaboration with federal agencies in targeting criminals, she insisted that ICE’s operations raise significant concerns about the rights of individuals involved.
