A spider monkey named Violeta is currently being housed at the Oakland Zoo following a chaotic drug bust at a safari park owned by Brian Tenney in Oregon. On May 15, police executed search warrants at the West Coast Game Park Safari, uncovering 80 grams of methamphetamine, 8 grams of cocaine, 44 firearms, and $1.6 million in cash and checks. Over 300 animals were also seized due to concerns about their welfare.
Tenney, aged 52, was arrested on May 27 based on a lengthy investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies. He faces charges related to drug possession and manufacturing but was released the same day pending further investigation. The park has faced numerous violations since 2016, including cases of dead and sick animals, prompting its closure.
During the raid, authorities discovered shocking conditions, such as a dead tiger stored in a freezer and many animals living in unsanitary conditions, as detailed in previous USDA inspections. Some animals, including a camel, chicken, and kinkajou, had to be euthanized because of severe health issues.
The state police are coordinating with various organizations, including the Oregon Humane Society, to ensure the relocated animals receive proper care. Investigators are assessing animal welfare and have emphasized that proper protocols are being followed to protect the animals during the search. The investigation into Tenney’s operations continues as authorities aim to address the extensive allegations of animal neglect and illegal drug activities associated with the safari park.
