South Korean Navy Patrol Plane Crashes During Training Flight
Pohang, South Korea – May 29, 2025: A South Korean navy P-3C patrol plane crashed shortly after taking off from its base in Pohang during a training exercise, raising concerns for the safety of its four crew members. The aircraft departed at 1:43 PM local time but soon encountered problems and fell to the ground under unclear circumstances.
Emergency responders, including rescue teams and fire trucks, were quickly dispatched to the crash site, where local residents reported the aircraft had collided with a hill near an apartment complex, igniting a fire. While the extent of the damage and scale of the fire remain unverified, images from Yonhap news agency depict firefighters battling flames amidst plumes of smoke rising through the trees.
In a statement, the South Korean navy confirmed the incident and is currently investigating the cause of the crash and the fate of the crew. As of now, authorities have not reported any civilian casualties in the area.
This incident follows last December’s tragic crash of a Jeju Air passenger plane at Muan International Airport, which resulted in numerous fatalities and marked one of the deadliest aviation disasters in South Korea’s history.
The Pohang Nambu police station acknowledged the crash but could not provide immediate clarification on the condition of the crew members. Ongoing rescue operations are aimed at assessing the situation more thoroughly.
As South Korea grapples with the implications of this accident, officials are working to ensure the safety and security of air travel in the region, hoping for a swift resolution to the current crisis.
