No Laughing Matter: A White Pigeon Enters a Mass. Fire Department, Sparking a Search for Its Owner

Lost Pigeon Reunited with Owner After Unusual Adventure at Ashby Fire Department

ASHBY, MA — In a tale that transcends the ordinary, a white pigeon made headlines this week after wandering into the Ashby Fire Department, sparking a mission to reunite the bird with its owner.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday when firefighters discovered the calm bird resting atop a firetruck at the station. Recognizing it wasn’t just any bird, they called town Animal Control Officer Victoria Gallant for assistance. The pigeon appeared unafraid and remained at the station, allowing firefighters to safely corral it into a workout room.

Gallant promptly took to social media, posting about the lost bird while also reaching out to the phone number attached to a tag on its leg. By Thursday, her efforts bore fruit when the probe into the pigeon’s ownership led to a call from a relieved owner based in nearby Ashburnham. He explained that the pigeon, along with two others, had been startled by a hawk, causing them to flee.

Ashby Police Chief Derek Pepple heralded the reunion as a significant milestone, stating, "I think this is Ashby’s first ever case of a missing bird being reunited with its owner." The police department is now actively searching for the other two pigeons, inviting residents who may spot them to get in touch at 978-386-5652.

This curious case serves as both a whimsical reminder of community spirit and a call for vigilance in the search for the remaining feathered friends. The Ashby Fire Department, known for their bravery, will undoubtedly add this unusual event to their rich history.
