ICE Undergoes Major Staff Changes Amid Mass Deportation Push
In a significant reorganization, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is reshuffling its leadership amid President Donald Trump’s intensified mass deportation efforts. On Thursday, ICE announced several key changes, including the retirement of Kenneth Genalo, the acting director of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO). Marcos Charles will step into this role, while Derek Gordon takes over as acting head of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
These leadership transitions come in response to the administration’s ambitious goal of 3,000 daily arrests of undocumented immigrants, a significant increase from the average of 656 arrests per day recorded from January to May. White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller emphasized that President Trump is committed to escalating these numbers continuously.
However, logistical challenges persist, including a stagnant workforce of enforcement officers and limited detention resources. To address these issues, the administration is advocating for a considerable funding boost in Congress aimed at facilitating the removal of up to 1 million immigrants annually and increasing the number of detention beds and ICE personnel.
This staff reshuffle is part of the administration’s broader strategy to remove unauthorized residents and ensure what it describes as safer American communities.
