Two escaped inmates from New Orleans, Jermaine Donald and Leo Tate, were captured over 300 miles away in Huntsville, Texas, after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase. They were extradited back to Louisiana on May 30 and will now be held in a secure facility. Their escape occurred on May 16 when they removed a toilet and sink from their cell, creating a hole in the wall.
Of the original ten inmates who escaped, eight have now been recaptured, while two—Antoine Massey and Derrick Groves—remain at large. Following the escape, authorities increased the reward for information leading to the capture of the fugitives to $50,000 each and arrested over a dozen individuals suspected of aiding the escapees.
Donald, 42, faces additional charges for resisting arrest, while both he and Tate are charged with the jailbreak. The day of the escape, three inmates were apprehended, followed by two more within the week. Notably, Groves, 27, has been convicted of multiple charges including second-degree murder related to a 2018 Mardi Gras shooting and is also dealing with a pending manslaughter charge. Massey, 32, faces serious charges including domestic abuse, theft of a motor vehicle, and has an outstanding warrant for more severe offenses in St. Tammany Parish.
Authorities continue to intensify their search for the remaining fugitives, employing various methods to bring them back into custody.
