Westfield Starfires Secure Victory Against Norwich Sea Unicorns
NORIwch, CT – The Westfield Starfires celebrated a significant 5-2 victory over the Norwich Sea Unicorns on Sunday, June 1, marking their first away win of the season, evening their record at 2-2. The Starfires have now defeated the Sea Unicorns in both matchups, who also hold a record of 2-2.
Third-year standout Josh Frometa, a star from American International College, shone with three RBIs, while pitcher Nathan Pirog delivered a stellar performance, throwing five shutout innings. Westfield’s offense ignited in the second inning when Cornell alum Ryan Dillon and Keene State’s Jonathon Chatfield walked. A fielder’s choice advanced the runners, allowing Ryan Keating to score on a throwing error. Cole Silvia then drove in Keating, putting the Starfires up 2-0.
Pirog, showcasing exceptional control, allowed only one walk while facing minimal threats. He skillfully executed a 1-6-3 double play to maintain the shutout after Norwich placed two runners on base in the third. The Starfires extended their lead in the fifth; after drawing walks, Silvia and John Mass executed a double steal, setting the stage for Frometa, who singled to drive in two runs. Dillon followed up with another RBI hit, pushing the lead to 5-0.
Norwich clawed back in the sixth, scoring two runs, but Westfield maintained composure under pressure. In the ninth, Frometa added to his tally with his third RBI, securing a 6-2 cushion. The Starfires’ pitching staff allowed only two runs, with relief appearances from Cody Hesselton, Rob Moynihan, and Jasper Nadel contributing to the win.
With an off day tomorrow, the Starfires look ahead to a doubleheader against the New Britain Bees on Tuesday, June 2, starting at 10:30 a.m.
