Lexington and Lowell Triumph at Div. 1 State Track Championships
MEDFORD – The energy was electric at Tufts University as Ainsley Cuthbertson defied the odds, battling stress fractures in her legs to lead the Lexington Minutemen to their first-ever Div. 1 girls outdoor track and field championship. Cuthbertson clinched victories in shot put (41-07.50 feet) and discus (130-08 feet), contributing to a total of 108 points for her team. “This is my last meet before Nationals… it feels great,” Cuthbertson remarked.
Lexington also secured the 4×800 relay victory, showcasing their dominance. Coach Rebecca Trachsel expressed pride in the young team’s achievements this season and their potential for future success.
Meanwhile, Lowell Red Raiders honored longtime coach Bobby Panagiotopoulos, who is seriously ill, by winning the boys championship with 87 points. Ethan Thevenin was a standout performer, winning both the 400 meters and triple jump. “The team has been thinking about (Panagiotopoulos) the whole time,” said coach Nick McArdle.
Elsewhere, notable performances included Chloe Elder of Natick, who set a new record in the girls 400-meter run, and Abigail Hennessy of Westford Academy, who won the girls mile. The event highlighted stellar talent across the board, setting the stage for an exciting future in Massachusetts track and field.
