Niecy Nash-Betts Speaks Out on Body Image and Love in Hollywood
In a recent discussion at The Hollywood Reporter’s Drama Actress Roundtable, actress Niecy Nash-Betts opened up about the challenges faced by women in the entertainment industry, particularly regarding intimate scenes. Joined by industry icons like Helen Mirren and Kathy Bates, the 55-year-old pointedly remarked on the stress of filming such scenes later in her career. "When I turned 45, it was like, ‘And now we want you to be naked,’" she said, lamenting that these scenes often take place during late-night shoots, which she finds unappealing.
Nash-Betts shared her frustrations about the vulnerability involved in filming intimate moments—highlighting the discomfort of worrying if her body was camera-ready, only to have scenes cut altogether. "I put myself out there to be that vulnerable and you don’t use it? Now I got an attitude," she quipped.
The actress elaborated on her diverse acting career, reflecting on the range of roles she’s taken on, from comedic performances in "Reno 911!" to more serious characters in "Jeffrey Dahmer." She also candidly recounted an early audition experience where producers commented on her weight in a hurtful manner. However, she humorously added, "I went home and ate a cookie," illustrating her confidence in who she is.
Nash-Betts also addressed her personal life, discussing her marriage to Jessica Betts. Despite skepticism from some who believed her new relationship might hinder her career, she has found immense support in Betts. As they approach their five-year anniversary, Nash-Betts is planning a vow renewal to celebrate their love, proudly stating, “I did what I wanted to do… This is the greatest love of my entire life.”
