Pamela Smart’s Request for Sentence Reduction Rejected by New Hampshire Governor
Concord, N.H. — New Hampshire Governor Kelly Ayotte has denied Pamela Smart’s latest plea for a hearing to reduce her life sentence for orchestrating the murder of her husband in 1990. At the age of 22, Smart engaged in an affair with a 15-year-old student, who ultimately shot her husband, Gregory Smart, at her behest. Smart was convicted of being an accomplice to first-degree murder and has maintained her innocence regarding the murder plot.
In a recent letter to Ayotte and her Executive Council, Smart expressed her transformation over the last 35 years, asserting she is prepared to contribute positively to society. "I have apologized to Gregg’s family and my own for the life taken," she stated, acknowledging her past actions and the need for accountability.
However, Ayotte emphasized the need for accountability for violent crimes, stating that the circumstances do not warrant a hearing for commutation. Notably, Smart’s case gained significant media attention and was the inspiration for Joyce Maynard’s book and the subsequent film "To Die For."
As public scrutiny continues, Smart remains behind bars, with her appeal denied once again.
