Prince Harry Considers Last Name Change Amid Ongoing Royal Rift
In a recent visit to the UK, Prince Harry reportedly sought advice from his uncle, Earl Spencer, regarding the possibility of changing his family name to honor his late mother, Princess Diana. This move suggests that the ongoing tensions within the royal family are still very much alive.
According to the Daily Mail, Harry, now 40, expressed interest in adopting Spencer’s surname, which would require him to give up the Mountbatten-Windsor name—a title shared with his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. However, Earl Spencer, who is 61, discouraged Harry from pursuing this complex legal change, emphasizing during their amicable conversation that it could be fraught with complications.
Such a change would likely not sit well with King Charles and Prince William, both of whom take pride in the Mountbatten-Windsor name, which blends the Windsor surname with the name of Prince Philip, Diana’s father. Members of the royal family descended from Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are entitled to use this name.
Historically, Harry and his family have used Mountbatten-Windsor, even being listed as such on their birth certificates. However, it was revealed last year that Harry and wife Meghan Markle had chosen “Sussex” as their family’s official surname. Meghan confirmed this change in a recent interview, stating, "You have kids and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children,’" emphasizing the importance of their familial identity.
As Harry navigates these complex family dynamics, the royal saga continues to unfold, highlighting the challenges of balancing personal identity with royal legacy.
