Eric Spofford Indicted for Stalking Journalists
Eric Spofford, the founder and former CEO of Granite Recovery Centers, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly plotting to stalk and harass journalists from New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR). The indictment includes multiple counts related to conspiracy and stalking, with Spofford facing up to five years in prison for each charge.
The troubling allegations emerged after NHPR published a March 2022 article detailing accusations against Spofford for sexual misconduct and abusive management practices during his tenure at the treatment center. Following the article’s release and ensuing media attention, Spofford denied the claims and filed a defamation lawsuit against NHPR, which was dismissed in 2023.
Prosecutors allege that between March and May 2022, Spofford conspired to intimidate NHPR journalists Lauren Chooljian and Daniel Barrick, among others, through vandalism, including throwing bricks and spray-painting threatening messages. Spofford reportedly instructed and compensated a friend, Eric Labarge, to carry out these acts.
In related developments, Labarge, along with other accomplices, has been convicted and sentenced for their roles in the conspiracy. Spofford’s next court appearance is pending.
