Springfield Police Arrest Suspect in Teen Assault Case

SPRINGFIELD — Authorities have apprehended a 53-year-old man, Ahmed Ahmed, in connection with the sexual assault of a teenage boy in a Springfield park last Friday evening. Following the incident, which occurred around 8 p.m. as the 17-year-old was walking on Hancock Street, the boy reported that he was forcibly dragged into Johnny Appleseed Park. He managed to escape and ran approximately a mile home, where he later reported the incident to police.

Detectives from the Special Victims Unit launched an investigation, analyzing city surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. Ahmed, who is currently homeless, was identified as the suspect. A warrant for his arrest was issued, and he was located and detained on the 700 block of State Street on Tuesday around 4 p.m.

Ahmed faces multiple charges, including kidnapping, aggravated rape during the commission of a felony, and stalking. Police Superintendent Lawrence E. Akers called the incident “extremely rare” for the city and urged residents to stay vigilant while out. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno praised the Special Victims Unit and extended thoughts to the victim and his family, expressing hope for justice.
