Springfield Gears Up for Ironman 70.3 Western Massachusetts with Expected $2 Million Economic Boost
SPRINGFIELD – As the countdown begins for the Ironman 70.3 Western Massachusetts triathlon set for Sunday, the impact on the local economy is anticipated to reach an impressive $2 million. According to Mary Kay Wydra, this influx stems from nearly 1,400 athletes and their supporters descending upon the Pioneer Valley for the competition.
Local businesses are poised to benefit from the anticipated surge in customer traffic. Raymond Berry, president of White Lion Brewing, noted that increased participation in events like this positively affects nearby restaurants and hotels, particularly those near the race’s finish line at Tower Square.
Entering race week, registrations are at 1,380, aligning closely with 2024’s numbers and surpassing the initial event last year. Due to concurrent events like high school graduations and Springfield’s Pride festival, local hotels are nearing capacity, though many triathletes may opt for Airbnb accommodations to meet dietary needs.
Among local participants is a relay team featuring Westfield Mayor Michael McCabe, West Springfield Mayor William Reichelt, and State Rep. Michael Finn, who aims to showcase community involvement.
With this year’s race, over 820 volunteers will support the event, contributing to aid stations and other essential services. As the race approaches, conditions on the Connecticut River are being closely monitored following concerns around spring weather, but forecasts indicate favorable conditions.
The race starts at 6 a.m. with a 1.2-mile swim in the Connecticut River, followed by a demanding 56-mile bike ride through the Hilltowns and concluding with a half-marathon through Springfield. Event organizers expect the Ironman will invigorate local interest in outdoor activities along the river and promote recreational activities, notably as community excitement continues to grow.
