Press Release: Boston Mayoral Race Faces Scrutiny Over Campaign Tactics
In a Medford office shared by two companies involved in the Boston mayoral race, the Democratic contest between Josh Kraft and incumbent Mayor Michelle Wu is igniting significant controversy. CP Campaigns, a company established just this March, has reportedly received around $425,000 from the super PAC Your City Your Future, supporting Kraft’s campaign.
CP Campaigns shares space with Liberty Concepts, another company that has worked on Kraft’s digital presence. Although both enterprises are distinct, they have a common thread: Jonathan Karush, who serves as president of Liberty Concepts and is also the principal owner of CP Campaigns. Karush insists that a "firewall" exists between the two to prevent any illegal coordination between the super PAC and the Kraft campaign.
Super PACs, which can collect unlimited donations, are legally barred from communicating directly with candidates, unlike traditional campaign finances, which are capped in Massachusetts. Critics, including Geoff Foster of Common Cause Massachusetts, express concern over the proximity of the two companies, questioning the effectiveness of the established firewall.
Your City Your Future has raised $2.9 million, heavily funded by prominent figures such as Jim Davis, chairman of New Balance, and Michael Rubin, CEO of Fanatics, both of whom have previously contributed to anti-Wu efforts. The super PAC has asserted that it operates independently from Karush and his companies, although the connections raise eyebrows.
While Liberty Concepts highlights previous expertise in digital campaigning, the sudden emergence of CP Campaigns invites questions about its background and legitimacy. As the election nears, transparency remains a pressing issue, with voters and watchdogs keeping a close eye on these intertwined relationships.
