Press Release: Man Charged in Fatal Bridge Crash
A 62-year-old man, Robert Campbell, was arraigned on Thursday for charges stemming from a fatal crash on the New Bedford-Fairhaven bridge in February that resulted in the death of 28-year-old Mason Evich. The Bristol County District Attorney’s office announced that Campbell faces charges of OUI manslaughter and second offense OUI.
The incident occurred on February 20, after Campbell had reportedly been drinking at the Bitter End bar in Fairhaven. According to prosecutors, he drove over the bridge, crossed the center double yellow line, and collided head-on with Evich’s vehicle.
Following his arraignment, a judge set Campbell’s bail at $15,000 and imposed conditions including a prohibition on driving and the surrendering of his passport. A pretrial conference is scheduled for July 21 at the Fall River Superior Court.
This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns about impaired driving and road safety in the region. The case continues to develop as more details emerge, and the community mourns the loss of Evich. Further proceedings will determine the legal ramifications for Campbell in connection with this heartbreaking incident.
