Massachusetts Student Detained by ICE Has Been Released

High School Student Released After ICE Arrest Sparks Community Outcry

CHELMSFORD, Mass. — Marcelo Gomes da Silva, an 18-year-old high school student from Milford, has been released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody after a judge granted him a $2,000 bond. Gomes da Silva was arrested last Saturday while driving to volleyball practice. Officials stated that ICE agents were actually looking for his father, a known public safety threat, but detained Gomes da Silva due to his illegal immigration status.

Having come to the U.S. from Brazil at age seven, Gomes da Silva described his six days in detention as "humiliating." He wore a makeshift bracelet from a metallic blanket, reflecting on the experience as deeply impactful. His lawyer, Robin Nice, criticized the arrest, stating, "We disrupted a kid’s life" and emphasized that these actions detracted from the judicial process.

During his detention, Gomes da Silva was confined with older inmates and denied basic comforts, including access to a Bible. He took it upon himself to comfort fellow detainees, many of whom did not understand their situation. "If I’m the only one who left, I lost," he said, advocating for better treatment for detainees.

The community has rallied around him, with students staging walkouts and dedicating a volleyball match to him. Concerned families voiced the distress the family has endured, expressing love for both Marcelo and their adopted home, America.

Gomes da Silva’s future remains uncertain as he awaits a court hearing regarding his immigration status. His lawyer remains hopeful, stating, “We’re optimistic he’ll have a future in the United States.” The case reflects a growing concern in immigrant communities regarding ICE’s aggressive enforcement practices.
